Mary Halvorson & Jessica Pavone (Thirsty Ear / US)

Abstecher is very glad and thankful to work for the outstanding chamber-jazz duo Mary Halvorson & Jessica Pavone!

Tour: January 17 – 25, 2014

Guitarist Mary Halvorson and violist Jessica Pavone‘s longstanding duo embraces a wide range of musical traditions to create what Time Out New York describes as “a challenging fusion of oblique art song, reflective chamber music and thorny free improv.”

Critics have noted their “level of interplay that borders on the clairvoyant” (Troy Collins, AllAboutJazz.com) and likened them to “an avant-garde Thelma and Louise, blazing a trail across the stylistic horizon like a 1966 Ford Thunderbird jerry-rigged from scraps of Eric Dolphy, Django Reinhardt, Appalachian gothic campfires, Charles Ives, and Hendrix-laced psychedelia” (Aidan Levy, Village Voice).

Known as “two of the most exciting figures in New York’s jazz and improvised-music community” (Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader), Halvorson and Pavone have worked together in a variety of musical settings over the past decade, most notably the collective quartet TheThirteenth Assembly and the ensembles of the iconic saxophonist/composer Anthony Braxton.

Unlike those larger groups, their duo boils down its diverse influences into intimate original compositions that skillfully blend ethereal vocals and folk-inspired simplicity with an experimental edge, expanding their appeal beyond the boundaries of avant-garde jazz.

“Pavone and Halvorson reach in and touch the brain, activating dreams and aggravations with their spare and insidious tunes,” writes the Montreal Mirror’s Gordon Allen. “The music challenges what is comfortable, with enough restraint to beckon the imagination, sometimes lifting and carrying along, sometimes dragging us toward what we cannot see.”

The group, which has performed at venues ranging from small cafés to major international festivals since 2002, will release its fourth recording this fall on the Thirsty Ear label. Learn more about Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone athttp://maryhalvorson.com and http://jessicapavone.com

On Tour April 11 – 20: Jessica Pavone (US / Tzadik) & Katherine Young (US / Porter)

Jessica Pavone Foto

String instrumentalist, Jessica Pavone has led her own bands; Army of Strangers and The Pavones, has performed in ensembles led by Anthony Braxton, Jason Cady, Jeremiah Cymerman, Matana Roberts, Aaron Siegel, Henry Threadgill, and Matthew Welch, as well as such collective groups as the Mary Halvorson/Jessica Pavone Duo, Normal Love, and The Thirteenth Assembly.
As a composer, Pavone has earned grants and commissions from the Aaron Copland Recording Fund, the American Music Center, The Kitchen, MATA, The Jerome Foundation, and the group, Till By Turning, which recently presented the European premiere of her piece Quotidian at Klangbad Festival in Germany.
Jessica’s music has been released by the Tzadik, Thirsty Ear, Skirl and Porter record labels. Her new album is called “Hope Dawson Is Missing”

Following upon her acclaimed first CD for Tzadik, Songs of Synastry and Solitude (2009), Jessica Pavone has created a beautiful and evocative song cycle that meditates on themes of destruction and rebuilding, migration, falsities, and undeniable truths.  Adding the heartfelt voice of Emily Manzo and long time associate Mary Halvorson, to the Toomai String quartet along with a dynamic rhythm section, the music is explorative and lyrical.  Pavone continues her imaginative exploration of new and exciting ways to present stories and song forms in chamber music contexts with this latest offering.

Composer and bassoonist Katherine Young creates acoustic and electro-acoustic music that uses curious timbres, expressive noises, and kinetic structures to explore the dramatic materiality of sound, constantly shifting ensemble energies, and the tension between the familiar and the strange. Anthony Tommasini in The New York Times described Katherine’s Inside UFO 53-32, as performed by the Flux Quartet, as a “raw, wailing, coloristic piece” with an “organic sweep.”

Recent projects include a new string quartet based on the opening scene from Once Upon a Time in the West, a piece for TimeTable percussion with Issue Project Room’s Emerging Artists Commission, and a commission for the String Orchestra of Brooklyn. Katherine also collaborated with choreographer Daria Fain and dancer Marya Wethers on TARGET: Furnace for solo dancer and three musicians. The piece had a week-long run at the Chocolate Factory, and The New York Times described the work as “full of absorbing elements: Katherine Young’s live original score …served as a lushly spare aural landscape…marvelously charged….”

Katherine has toured with Anthony Braxton, and she has recorded with Hans Joachim Irmler from Faust and F.M. Einheit from Einsturzende Neubauten. She is a founding member of the experimental chamber collective Till by Turning, and she performs regularly in the improvising duo Architeuthis Walks on Land, who released Natura Naturans on Carrier Records in 2010. Katherine also plays with the chamber-pop quartet the Fancy.
